I have an Acutron handheld reader and it seems to have no problem reading the basic codes on a 986 (or my wifes VW Bora or our Audi S4). I think if you are having a problem its with the software. Id be interested if you could find some free OBD software for a laptop with bluetooth.

The Durametric system seems to be the best for Porsche because it can access the higher functions that the general purpose OBDII scanners cant access. I think its pricey though.

It depends what you want to use this thing for. If its to reset error codes any ol' scanner should work. If however you need to reset the airbag warning because you tried to disconnect the heated seats like this idiot then you need to something tailored for Porsche's.
