I've thought about buying a track toy as well. It will probably be an older Miata. i beat the pants off that car and NOT ONCE did it whine or quit. The engine is bullet proof, suspension and exhaust mods are a pittance, tires are cheap since they're 15" and the car does not feel the slightest bit modern and disconnected. i don't really thing you can find all that wrapped up in one car that wouldn't require a trailer (street legal). Why did I ever sell that car...I spent twice as much overhauling the Boxster.
I ended up with an MR2 with a V6 swap. Manual everything (windows, locks, non-abs brakes, steering), 2600 pounds, mid engine, cheap (1.5% of the cost of the CTR ). Should be fun.
