I asked the upholstery shop about it when they were putting new top in.

You CAN put a liner in pre-2001 boxsters.. the only problem, you need new plastic pieces that hold the liner, earlier cars (I have a 2000 base) have the plastic piece (the one in the middle of the frame) that doesn't have "holes"/clamps (or something like that).
New plastic trim costs 200$++ at the dealer, that why shops usualy say it's not doable.
