If properly treated (spooled down and cooled, when parking) and maintained (good oil and interval change) turbochargers should last a long time (>50K miles). They can easily be re-built (UMW for example), replaced, or upgraded for as little as $1k each. Prices go up fast from there. Upgarded turbochargers also need other upgrades (intercooler, tuning, and etc) which increases the total costs significantly.
