Lowering Springs
I know we're all entitled to our opinions about what makes a great car, and I don't mean to be pejorative, but it sounds to me like you want to take what was once a $60,000 car and turn it into a ricer.
Look for my thread on tuning your suspension. If you don't match spring and damper rate, or stiffen the springs to reduce the ride height by 30 mm, you will indeed adversely affect handling. If you simply shorten the springs, you'll likely hit the bumpstops far more often, which isn't good handling, either. By lowering the chassis, you also affect the front and rear roll centers which affects weight transfer in corners...there are so many variables that unless you know what you're doing, you will make the car worse.
This is not to say that someone with the wherewithal (including a lot of money) can't experiment and arrive at a solution that results in a car than goes around corners better than stock. But it is not as simple as putting in stiffer and/or shorter springs.
