Long thread already on this but I think the basics are:
986 - prettier, more delicate, more like the original concept
987 - more muscular, more athletic, more immediate road presence
Personally, I think the 986 is the better overall design. The 987 has some fussy detailing, although I really like the rear on the 987 gen 2.
