He're a video of a guy running his home-built rotary radial engine. He also built an RC plane for the engine and flew it.

The earliest airplane engines like that operated on a total loss oiling system, and used castor oil. The pilot ended up ingesting a fair amount of it from the blowback. I would guess those guys couldn't go flying everyday... had to stay close to the outhouse for a while!!
