You are misjudging the Corvette motor. It is smaller and lighter than all DOHC motors (including the Northstar). It has a completely flat powerband. It has enough torque to move a car on the freeway at less than 2K rpms (that's how the Vette gets almost 30mpg freeway...ultra tall gearing). And lastly, it makes a boatload of torque.

As for handling, it has the potential to handle well. The chassis is hydroformed like the Vette's I believe. That means it's ultra stiff. Of course, since it's GM I'm sure they'll find a way to screw it up trying to save a buck.
