A Boxster's clutch can most definitely go more than 50,000 miles so don't go by mileage as a guideline for replacement. Unless you're riding the clutch, it shouldn't smell like it's burning. Even if it's worn out.

My guess is that you've got a broken cv boot and you've got grease burning on the exhaust system or an oil leak somewhere that's dripping on the exhaust.
