a wind deflector is a must! I used to have a miata...no wind blocker and with the top down, you would get so much wind that it was annoying...
on my boxster, with the top down and my windblocker...I almost think it's quieter than with the top up!  if you then roll up the side windows...there is vritually NO wind in the cabin..even at freeway speeds.
you can carry on a conversation in the car, with the top down, NO PROBLEM. even if it's cold outside....it is nice and comfy too. just put the heater on and fire up the seat heaters....
