Is it possible I need to disconnect the battery for a few hours then reconnect to make any changes to the computer? I did recharge the battery while it was connected to the car....

As for spark plugs/wires, I'll have the shop check those when I bring it in. Hopefully this (power surge) won't be the reason to bring it to the shop in the first place.
That distance is more than enough; I think at this time you need to do a scan for any active or pending codes and collect a PID catalog (realtime readings of the sensors) to determine where you stand.
