if you said you have a neighbour mechanic and don't feel like bringing the car in for a PPI as Mike F. suggested, why don't you make an appt. and have the mech. have a go through with the car. put it up on lift and have him visually check the suspension, alignment etc..
if you're buying this car for $8,100 just be sure to put aside at least $2-$3g's in maintenance, tires, repairs.. the plus+ for you, is you know and see the car daily in your work. the minus- are the higher mileage and what you claim to be some noise.. as long as you know what you're getting into you'll be fine , and i'm sure with continued maintenence you'll have lots of good driving left with the Box.
