Don't forget the savings Porsche realized by sharing components extensively between the 986 and 996 - if you figure that the 993 was going to be redesigned anyways they leveraged a good amount of that investment in creating the Boxster. A lot of interior, some suspension, the whole front body structure and probably a lot more are shared.
