how you start to "walk the cat back" when trying to figure out what happened here--in a 100 words or less

To the untrained eye, there is so much damage here it looks like it would be hard to figure out what failed first--which prompts the question.
The cylinder wall failure--and crack at the top end--if I'm looking at this right--makes me think that where this started.
BTW, easyc, how did the plastic chain tensioner parts look on this and how many miles were there on the car when it failed.
