My Experience

I bought my car with 14,600 miles from a Porsche dealer after they did the 15K service (at least, the records SAY they did). Drove a week with no problems, then went on a longer drive, parked it, and came back later to find a pool of oil on my garage floor near the rear passenger wheel. Freaked me out, especially after reading in here all the stuff about RMS and engine failures. Took the car to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the oil filler pipe had a crack in it and the entire engine block was covered with fresh oil. Apparently the dealer just kept pouring oil down the pipe until the gauge read "overfull" and didn't notice that a good portion of the oil was going onto the engine block. I could have taken the car back to the dealer but there was no warranty and anyway with people that sloppy -- and with the dealer being 40 miles away -- I figured I couldn't trust them anyway. I had the independent fix the pipe and mop up the oil, and problem hasn't recurred and my garage floor is blissfully dry. BTW, he also advised that the dealer hadn't cleaned out the radiators and they were full of crud. Combine that with the fact the car also had a bad battery that won't hold a charge, and a service manager who was snotty to me when I called, and I have dealt with that dealer for the last time. Fortunately the independent is friendly and I can learn stuff from him.
