Fun With Numbers, and Rumors

I recently read where '04 Boxster sales plummeted some 23% from the '03 numbers (11,772 vs 15,409), with US sales falling a disasterous 42% (3,513 vs 6,088). Porsche has to do something to reverse the slide, and IMHO the face-lifted '05 model isn't going to do it. Nor is the upcoming reputed $65,000 Cayman coupe.
I also stumbled on an Internet tale stating that Porsche may not be done tinkering with the Boxster line yet. The story says that unnamed sources close to the factory have floated the possibility of a stripper Boxster based on the 2.7 liter engine, with less std. eqpt and a short option list, the objective being to bring the car to market at a price in the $30,000 range.
While this is purest speculation at this point, lending credence is the fact that Porsche did this once before. It was called the 356 Speedster, and resulted in a car that became an icon for Porsche enthusiasts.
Boxster Speedster, anyone?
