Hello Everyone -

I own a 2000 Boxster S, which I recently took to my dealer for service. The check engine light activated on two occassions over the past two months. The first time this occurred, the dealer said they could not determine the problem. They said the O2 sensors were fine and that they simply reset the warning (i.e., shut-off the light).

Within about one week, the light activated again (solid not blinking). My wife took the car in today and the dealer said they suspected a wiring problem related to an 02 sensor. This afternoon they called us and said they tested the entire wiring system for the O2 sensors and there was no problems. The dealer said they contacted Porsche (I don't know what this means) and that they suspected the mass air flow sensor had failed. The dealer subsequently replaced the mass air flow sensor and tested the vehicle. Apparently the check engine light remained on after the replacement. The dealer then called Porsche engineering and reported the persistence of the problem. They said that Porsche told them the computer on the 2000 must be manually reprogrammed when the mass air flow sensor is replaced.

I am making this posting because I don't like the sound of this. My question is, when the mass air flow sensor on a 2000 Boxster S is replaced, does the vehicle computer need to be manually reprogrammed to know that the replacement has been made, or should the vehicle automatically sense this?

I greatly appreciate any replies to this posting, as we are in the middle of dealing with this situation.
