With the placement of the tie-rod on the rear suspension, to bend it, would require an impact from front of the wheel to bend it... anything from the rear like backing into to a curb would technically pull on the arm and not cause it to bent but break or stretch...but we know it wont stretch.

They probably ran over something on the freeway like a long 4x4 peice of wood or jacked up the car from the rear toe links instead of the jacking points.
