They are remakably resilient can be saved If, you get to it real quick like.( couple days of breathing room tops, more and it gets iffy).
I'd add to idheaton prescription, if you see any white fuzzy corossion, give it scrub with a fine wire brush and WD 40 (or contact cleaner). Do the same with the connectors....and leave it out and open, on it's end and in a warm place for day or so for good meassure.
