The broken part turned out to be the oil pump housing and it was just not reasonable to try welding it. I did let them purchase a used part though, a complete oil pump assembly including the housing off a wrecked Boxster S with high 40 K miles on it. My engine has 36 K miles on it. I inspected the parts myself and I am getting a written guarantee on the parts and labor.
I'll only regret this decision if the oil pump fails at some future date but the pump gears look about like new ones still.
