I've never run into that problem. I guess it's possible that a trickle charger might have more circuitry in the plug itself to manage the charge and that could cause it to be larger. I've only used the cig lighter for regular power cords. I think the cig lighter receptacle is a little shallow so heavy plugs (like my iPod FM transmitter that's a big brick with a plug on back) may fall out, but regular plugs with a wire attached have always worked.
