You just want to do multiple stops from varying speeds. Start out at a slow speed with very minimal brake pressure. Then steadily increase your speeds and braking pressure. All you need is about a dozen or so stops to get the pads bed in.

You really should replace all the hardware. You can reuse the shims and just re-glue them to the new pads.
