I installed a TTP cold-air intake that uses an oil filter, not long after that the MAF needed replacing, but I think the MAF I had was the original for my 2000 Boxster.

So, maybe it was the oil and maybe it was the process of installing the intake, or maybe it was just old. BTW, its been close to 20K miles on the MAF I put in and it seems to be working fine. I have been playing with CEL error codes, but so far they seem to say the MAF is OK.
