Yes, if you pay $20k for the boxster expect to give the state $1700 plus a few fees they tack on because they can.

I paid him 75% of the price we agreed upon for the car, and paid him 25% of the price we agreed upon for the 'accessories' as a separate purchase. The state still got their money on most of the deal. I shouldn't have said 'very little'.

You're going to have to allocate money for taxes, I don't know anyway around it. It's part of the price of admission.

jmabasa, so you did not have to pay any tax at all when you registered the car under your name? Are you in CA?

kelly1005, how much is "very little"? So you did not pay the 8%+ tax?

My budget for the car is about $22k, if I'm gonna have to pay some kind of tax at about 8%, then that leaves $20k for the car. If there is no tax, the entire $22k can be alotted to the car alone.
