Chargers that don't stop sending current through the battery when the capacity is full can damage the battery, any battery.

That's why the battery tender is such a great tool. It senses when the battery's at full capacity and stops. No trickling at all.

It's recommended to remove the electrical connection to the car when charging at the battery. Obviously you can't do that if you're charging through the lighter.
