A failing CV joint would make noise, not just decellerating but also with quick jabs of the throttle. One way to check for "dryness" in a cv is:

Jack car up
Reach under and push the axle in towards the trans and out towards the hub.Should be "moist" or "soft". If you hear distinct metal on metal, you need to at least re-pack if not rebuild/replace. Also twisting the axle forward and backwards. Then compare right and left sides.

Either way, get under there and poke around. No use causing unecessary wear/damage.
