AWESOME POST, i really really wanted some instruction on the power slide, now to find a legal place to practice that. I hope my non-S boxster has enough power to do the power slide.
|
i can assure you that it does....dont ask how i know :)
|
Dude... Do tell, im a PM if u must, After watching the vid, I didnt go try donuts or power sliding in the streets, but i did try to dump the clutch in 1st to spin the tires. BTW i have new Nexen 3000 z rated tires and it was kick ass, tires spun, they were very quiet and the car got alittle sideways the traction didnt catch until the vehicle speed matched 5k rpms and then rocketed away, It was a thing of beauty, I had Bridgestones before and it think they were too grippy cause the tires bounced, I think thats what your experiencing, too much grip, not enough slip. Also, the tire spin was done at the same stop sign, the same lane as the bouncy tires i use to have.

That vid is awesome - thanks for the post! I was giggling the whole way through.

if you wanna learn something like this, tiff is the man

thanks for the great vid......now where is that abandoned air strip ?! :p

Honestly, I could be missing something, but I don't see why anyone would want to do what this guy did with the car. I don't know much about fastest lap times, but in whatever track driving I've done and observed, the fastest cars do very little (if any) sliding or abuse in general. Their driving is actually the smoothest and least abusive to their cars.
I have a feeling that all this slipping and sliding that's prevalent in these "review" videos (tons of them online) and in car magazines is either just for show (a lot of flash with no substance) and/or being sponsored by every tire producer in the world. Just like tobacco companies pushing "cool" smoking to kids. I bet the Michelin guy watching all this "tire painting" was having much more fun than the driver. That is, if being jarred and thrown left and right in the drivers seat (during the 360 stunt) could be descibed as "fun". Sorry to be raining on the parade. Just an opinion. Z. |
This type of driving is too much fun to explain in words (except for the donuts, which make me barf), but IMO it should be reserved for rental cars and government issued vehicles only.

aside from burning up your tires
Does this do any damage to the car?
|
It's hell on the tires with every single slide and hard on the suspension if done a lot.
Tiff drives very expensive cars he does not own and never has to personally pay for when he burns tires off them or wrecks them. Never forget that. I still love watching him thrash cars around a track though. I live vicariously through him, and keep my Michelins from spinning because I have to pay big bucks to replace them and well, I choose not to do that more often than is necessary. |

You know - I'll side just a bit with Z... If I had the choice, I'd do these moves in my buddies ride more then in my own.
But I guess that I was born with a little PWT blood, cause nothing makes me giggle more then seeing a crazy Brit turn 360s top down in a M Roadster. There just isn't any better television then this. - C5150 |

HA! No doubt. I've never seen a fella so calm as his car flips round and round. This guy is freaking nutz - he's got to be the coolest Brit I've ever seen. Only thing that would make him better would be a crazy Austrian accent.

it is pretty amazing how he drives. if you look at a video where hes powersliding the S, he actually looses control couse of talking, he even said it...pretty funny

In conclusion, all the giddy responses about sliding videos like this only confirm that "cool" trumps substance, and that corporations will always choose "cool" to sell more of their stuff -- especially when "cool" directly contributes to more sales, like tires in this case.
Imagine Tiff, wearing a helmet (like he should), paying attention to the track (like he should), holding the wheel with both hands (like he should), and driving to maximize the abilities of the high-performance car he is driving (i.e. minimize showy sliding) -- then he would be much faster and safer (while promoting proper technique for maximum speed and safety to the audience) BUT he would be much less "cool" and have a much smaller audience. And that doesn't sell well. Personally, I buy high-performance gear (car, skis, etc) to use it the way it was meant to be used. If I wanted my skis and cars to slide, I would buy the crappiest gear and slide my ass off for a fraction of the money and at a fraction of the speed. But that's me. Z. |
I wouldn't be so fast to say that "cool" trumps substance - there is certainly some substance in being a driver so talented at the wheel, that you can safely flip 360s in a high performance ride.
And yes - this video was designed to sell tires. So what? If you ran a company that sold tires, wouldn't you try to increase sales by promoting "cool?" If I were a stock holder in your company, I sure as hell would hope you would. I do want to add that the last thing this video makes me want to do is burn up my tires in my Box. I enjoy the performance driving more - personal preference. But this is great tv. - C5150 |

Companies can try to sell anything they want in any way they want. Doesn't mean I have to buy their product or the way they are selling it. I'm glad we agree on burning tires vs performance. Z. |
well the point of the video is not to show u fastest way around the track (like you should), but to show u slides and doughnuts...so you can do what you want with it.
i am sure that he can take turns fast around th track, hense a lot of peoples suspicions that he is the Stig....so i duno, driveing skills are the same |
