Rebuilding the heads

These guys are clearly not seating.

http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1755144784.jpg

Not surprisingly four of them are bent.

http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1755144796.jpg

Luckily the valve guides are not damaged.

http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1755144804.jpg

So fresh valves instead of the bent ones should fix it.

http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1755144816.jpg

Using some grinding compound to improve seating of the new valves.

Lapping.

http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1755144955.jpg

I had to go back to these ones 2 or three times.

http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1755144967.jpg

But finally they were sealing.

Inspection for potential deterioration/warpage. Measured with the feeler gauge and a straight edge the difference everywhere was lower than 0.03mm. In the shop manual this is exactly the highest tolerated value for a freshly resurfaced head. The tolerance for a used head that you still can put back on is 0.05mm. Great news, no resurfacing needed.

Coming along.

Timing, variocam, lifters

I took apart, cleaned and reassembled each lifter. I can't stand lifer ticking.

Soaking overnight in engine oil.

Back again.

Variocam teardown.

New pads and chain.

Reassembled.

Setting the timing and camshaft position.

Congrats!

Did you expect to take this engine rebuilt one year?

Newsguy 11-08-2025 05:13 AM

LOL!
Mine has taken four so far, through supply issues and a move.
Hope to wrap this month.

Absolutely. I'm not a mechanic and I have very limited time for wrenching in the garage with two small kids. And this is not my only one project ;)
