my prototype inspired boxster build

Here is my Prototype inspired Boxster Ive just completed, I started with a clapped out 01 S that was being sold for parts. I made all the body modifications myself. Front bumper is made from pieces of 2 bumpers bonded together, air intakes are Cayanne exhaust tips. I wanted to change the look from every angle so I made the taillight covers and the tonneau cover out of fiberglass. The side louvers are steel. I also removed the body lines around all 4 wheel lips to give it a cleaner, more 550 spider look The interior was totally shot so I bought a complete Boxster red interior from a 99 and redyed it a brighter red, I also painted all the trim pieces body color. It's been a 3 year project (off and on). Let me know what you think !

It look great, very, very similar to the concept. Great job!
Any issues putting the top up/down, or overheating from reducing the radiator and engine vent sizes so drastically? Did you do am amberdectomy, I can't tell from the pictures?

I love the tail lights. Gives the car such a retro future look. I think boxsters have always been some sort of spaceship turn of the century image of a future that never came due to giant a pillars and regulations. Sexy car, @914racer

Glad you like it, the toneau has to be removed to put top down, I have a felt lined bag that fits in the trunk. The side lovers do seem to cut down on the intake sound a little, but I don't notice any performance issues, I wouldn't recommend it for the track though. I haven't driven it enough in warm weather yet, I'm prepared however to cut some vents or scoop in the underside of the bumper if necessary.

Masterful job. The front bumper and side vents are so much like the original concept - simple elegant lines.

Outstanding craftsmanship, 914!

I was the guy in the blue 986 parked next to you at Hershey. Did you get your coolant issue fixed?

Yes, I overfilled the reservoir, it's fine now. That wasn't too embarrassing!

That custom front bumper work is very impressive! And the custom red redyed leather also looks absolutely great. (what products/process did you use, and how did it turn out in terms of the grain and up-close look/sheen, feel, suppleness, durability? I'm refinishing some on my black leather pieces now, with a couple failed attempts already, so am steep on the learning curve there.)

I have mixed thoughts about the lovered side vents and painted upper tail lights. I think the all-red (50 year anniversary edition, I think?) tail lights would look a bit closer, and maybe better. Yours are more "custom" though. The lovers definitely look custom. The custom rear clamshell is very impressive work.

I'm not sure about the front amber situation - can't help but think going to amber front headlights would be more authentic to the 550 spyder look. If you did though, it might look better to clear out the front side markers at the same time. I also can't help think a custom exhaust tip or a base (single outlet) of some sort would look good. (That original boxster prototype edition exhaust looks so cool to me! )

I also love the wheels! Thanks for sharing.
