Black Boxster, short shifter !

Hi everyone !

Here I am, Benjamin, 22. I just moved from France to Florida !

I have just started an Automotive Technologie degree in West Palm Beach :)

I needed a car to replace the miata I had in France ... so I thought a Boxster would be nice, and after a quick ride in one, I was fixed !

So after one week of research, I found the one !

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...538/363lnW.jpg

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...673/z0LoPy.jpg

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...633/urSQFo.jpg

I bought it with 19" black wheels (for sale now) that I replaced with genuine boxster S 17" wheels :)

there are some imperfection on it (but for the price ...), the windshield has a crack ... one tire was dead, the brakes are almost worn, and, due to Florida's roads, the paint on the front bumper is all marked by rocks ...

BUT, the coolant tank is new, the air/oil separators too, and a new throttle body :)

so, overall it's in great shape !

Very nice. Good luck with it.

Ben006 10-07-2014 05:44 PM

Thank you !
I will start to modify it a little soon (firt, full service, then modifying )

(Is it normal that my messages appear 1 day after I post them ?)

gmboxster 10-07-2014 08:19 PM

Your left front tire needs some air, lol. And NO , your posts should show up immediately.
Good luck with the car, and Welcome to the forum.

BIGJake111 10-08-2014 03:29 AM

Nice boxster! I wish you the best with your plans here in America! You show that you have a plan, ambition, that you aren't afraid to set it into motion, goodluck but I don't think you will need it!

ep3_lol 10-08-2014 04:18 AM

Welcome to the US! Nice car, you'll love it. Which Miata did you have in France?

BruceH 10-08-2014 05:16 AM

Great looking Boxster! Sounds like you know your way around the car already, that's great! Welcome to the US and the forum:cheers:

Ben006 10-08-2014 10:26 AM

Yes the left front tire was flat, and the headlights were yellow ... now everything is good ;)

Thank you all, for your support :)

I love the boxster already ! not as radical as my miata (pictures bellow), but far more comfortable, faster, WAYYYY stiffer ! and that sound ... love it !

the only problem is ... everything is square here ^^ no road to enjoy the car's cornering ability !
I hope to bring it at the racetrack (Palm Beach International Raceway is just 50minutes away !) one day !

In france, I had that :
1991(like me..) EUNOS Roadster (known here as Mazda Miata) RHD, and a loooot of work on it (I rebuilt the engine, wilwood brakes, KYB shocks, roll bar, no AC, no PS, semi slick tires, Corbeau bucket seat (Corbeau L.E. driver) and a LOT of other thing (in total, it cost me more than the boxster ... but it was sooo good)

I took this pictures the day I sold it ... for barely the price of the aftermarket parts on it ... but it was worth the loss (???) ^^

In a week or two I should receive all my tools from the school, and start working on the car

schnellman 10-08-2014 01:50 PM

Bienvenue

Welcome to the US of A, and to the forum. Beautiful car. Have fun.

MitchSF 10-08-2014 04:23 PM

Hopefully your AC works here, otherwise you will think you're in hell during the summer.

Ben006 10-08-2014 05:23 PM

Yes it works fine on the boxster !
the first time I came in Fl, last year, I was shocked by the heat, and the humidity ! and it was in february ...

I can't even drive top down during the day if the sun is shinning !

Slate 01 10-09-2014 04:40 PM

" ... so I thought a Boxster would be nice, and after a quick ride in one, I was fixed !"

Wow, that sounds rather extreme to have your balls cut off after riding in a Boxster. You must live in a tough neighborhood.;)

Ben006 10-10-2014 07:27 AM

Ahah, I didn't think it was meaning that ^^

Ben006 10-14-2014 02:48 PM

Today I did that ;)

cut a piece of "suede" fabric.
http://nsa33.casimages.com/img/2014/...3702776774.jpg

glue the middle with spray glue
[URL=http://www.casimages.com/i/141015123337826168.jpg]http://nsa34.casimages.com/img/2014/...3337826168.jpg[/URL

http://nsa34.casimages.com/img/2014/...2314085815.jpg

then trim it to the desired shape
http://nsa33.casimages.com/img/2014/...3326258190.jpg

then finish it by glueing all the piece on the part
http://nsa34.casimages.com/img/2014/...3444840140.jpg

http://nsa33.casimages.com/img/2014/...3545219004.jpg

http://nsa33.casimages.com/img/2014/...3603411441.jpg

et voila ;)

the fabric I've used has blue shades under the sun ... I may try with another seller (But before I have a 56"x2yrds piece to use ... ^^).

If you want, I can do it for you on any parts (the part I show Is very hard to do due to its complex shape ... It took me around 2hours for both)

I've also painted the "bumperettes", but It's not completly done, I'll show it to you ;)

more comming soone (I hope !)

BIGJake111 10-14-2014 02:51 PM

Nice to see some tasteful customization!

Ben006 10-14-2014 04:17 PM

thank you :)

I think I'll do the arm rests and keep things simple.

Ben006 10-15-2014 05:46 PM

the first arm rest is done !
the door card is very easy to remove ! if there were no air bag that is one part that I would make in carbon, with a pull handle to open the door :D (I will think about that !)

The arm rest is easier to do than the handle suround, and I improve my technique each time !

http://nsa33.casimages.com/img/2014/...3454131313.jpg

http://nsa34.casimages.com/img/2014/...3548308931.jpg

I'm also working on an improved version of the cheap short shifter you find on ebay ! There will be absolutely no play in my shifter ! the only problem is... I need to do at least ten of them to have the machine shop doing the work (just a turning operation, but the minimum is 100$ for any work :/ )
But before, I have to test it and check if it worth the cost !

Ben006 10-19-2014 11:15 AM

done !

http://nsa34.casimages.com/img/2014/...0228193890.jpg

I tried to polish the tailpipe, it worked quite good :)

http://nsa34.casimages.com/img/2014/...5925563170.jpg

I'm still searching for a good machine shop :/

Ben006 10-19-2014 02:48 PM

This afternoon I tried another thing ... wet sanding !
It's long, and difficult, and I didn't have the right sanding paper (1200 grit instead of 1500 and more), but it worked quite well !

at this state ... I was concerned about how I will get de glossy finish back ...

But after a good rubbing with a rubbing compound :

The door handle took me 30 / 40 minutes
http://nsa34.casimages.com/img/2014/...2140151024.jpg

Ben006 10-22-2014 05:07 PM

I ordered the new brake discs and pads :)

and cleaned the car !
http://nsa34.casimages.com/img/2014/...5104414688.jpg

but the bumper is still in bad shape if you look too close :/
http://nsa34.casimages.com/img/2014/...5141112195.jpg

I still haven't find a machine shop to do my shifter job :/ they don't want to do just 2 tiny rods :/
Aren't some of you interested by a ballbearing short shifter ?

Ben006 10-28-2014 09:44 AM

Changed the klimatronic position :)
before :
http://nsa33.casimages.com/img/2014/...4641246867.jpg
after:
http://nsa34.casimages.com/img/2014/...4702142912.jpg
http://nsa33.casimages.com/img/2014/...4825491372.jpg

Well, I still have to make something to hide the mess in the bottom :)

next thing is to paint the windshield bottom trim (and don't know how to call it in english ?)

next week I should have my tools from the school (well... I hope !)

And I finally manages to get the ball bearings on the shifter (by myself ... no one want to do the job on so tiny parts :/), still need a little work and it will be perfect ! next thing will be : test it in the car !

Got the tools from school today ! nice set of tools and good quality !

http://nsa33.casimages.com/img/2014/...5732811232.jpg

:D

I also got the modified shifter with the ball bearings in !
I didn't expect so much improvement over stock !
There is no more play in the assembly, you just feel the play in the cables and gearbox itself !

http://nsa34.casimages.com/img/2014/...5752746588.jpg

Tomorrow maybe I will change the brakes discs and pads and next week the spark plugs and serpentine belt !

MitchSF 11-05-2014 03:46 PM

Ben, why did you decide to come to the USA for automotive school rather than staying in France? There must be good programs there, too. Just curious.

Ben006 11-05-2014 04:48 PM

when you are a car enthousiast, you don't want to stay in France ^^

I had the opportunity to study here, so I took it and we'll see what I can do next :)

In France, there are some programs: to become a simple mechanic, or an engineer... there is no in-between :/

I already have a degree as an industrial maintenance technician, and I tried engineering school last year... and despite coming 4th on the competitive exam, I found that it was too difficult and I quickly realize that, that was not the kind of job I wanted (I did the same mistake with my first degree in "mechanical design" ...).

I know that those jobs would have make me earn a lot of money, but I'd rather do something I like more (getting my hands dirty by building, creating etc).

Now, I try to be in the head of class (I don't know the other's grades, but I might be close to the top :) )

If I can't work here after my degree, I will go back to France and try to find a job In Monaco in a luxury car dealership.

The only advantage of french schools is that they are mostly free ... not 40K

Snap-On accept no substitute!

Ben006 11-19-2014 11:46 AM

those are "carlyle" I don't know this brand but they seem good for now :)

http://nsa33.casimages.com/img/2014/...9490615198.jpg
my friends bought their car too, a SLK320 and a TT 3.2 :) a nice set of german cars to complete with the boxster !

speaking of the boxster, I tried to give a second life to my yellow headlights :
http://nsa34.casimages.com/img/2014/...9490581737.jpg
http://nsa33.casimages.com/img/2014/...4906334829.jpg
http://nsa34.casimages.com/img/2014/...4907216239.jpg

2h30 to do one light !
I screw the second one :/ it's in fair condition but not perfect, I will have to do it again :/

I also win some entry ticket for a drag race at PBIR the 29th :)

Ben006 11-23-2014 02:37 PM

I got the aux cable for the cdr 22 in :)
works nice !

still need to make a center console !

I will also put negative camber in the front since I currently have close to positive camber and makes the car understeer sometimes.

And finally I still need to find 2 more person for the shifters group buy :/

Ben006 11-25-2014 05:23 PM

I have some news :)

First, I'm a bit concerned about my coolant temperature :/
in normal condition, everything's good, just a bit over 180F.
but today (it was more than 90F today) I tried a little 0 to 60 (and more ...) and the temp immediatly rose to 200F (lets say around 200, I can't tell exactly, but more than usually).

This is not really HIGH temp, but I'm more concerned about the it came to this temperature after just 10s of full throttle !
Is that the same with you ?

then, I know cars lose power when the weather is hot and humid. but it seems that it lost too much power. Porsche ECU are that conservative ?
intake temp is 111F wich is really high too (same day, on a f150, I measured 90F)

I may be a little paranoid about that ^^

next, I went for the first time on a junkyard today, found great things :)
http://nsa34.casimages.com/img/2014/...4507914209.jpg
the switch and horns are for a friend, and the intake tube and the strut brace ... I will make them fit ^^

I started my centerconsole !
http://nsa34.casimages.com/img/2014/...4505895859.jpg
http://nsa34.casimages.com/img/2014/...4506160697.jpg
http://nsa33.casimages.com/img/2014/...4509222770.jpg

it's looking rough, but i plan on cover it, so I don't car about scratches now :)

If I can make it fit and looking worthy of a porsche, I might make a few for the forum :)

this is it.

Hi !
Today I tested a boxster S tip tronic for a friend :)
He bought it !

If you want one, PM me ;)

Next level : cleaning the radiators, open the wheel well, and putting on my headers !

BIGJake111 12-01-2014 01:04 PM

Very nice! What do you think of the S? Any big opinions, I upgraded to an S but had been out of a boxster for a while so it mostly felt the same to me.

Ben006 12-01-2014 02:02 PM

The S has clearly more torque in the low rev range, but feels less punchy in the top end (probably due to the fact that the torque curve is more linear).

It doesn't make much more sound than the 2.7 either.

I didn't try the full braking power, but I'm sure there is a big improvment over the base model here !

The suspensions are much stiffer, but still comfortable. The S may be more fun when driving at the limits.

But I really don't like the center opening for the third radiator ... it looks like a cheap aftermarket part !

They both have pros and cons :)

TRIXZBIT 12-26-2014 04:18 PM

looks cool!

you can compare with the picture in the first post :)

15mm is just right, it looks like factory, but more agressive !

Ben006 02-09-2015 12:11 PM

already 6000miles behind the wheel !

to celebrate, I'm waiting for 10L of 10w40 liqui moly engine oil, a 6month engine cleaning kit from liqui moly too.

a few missing clips and nuts, a new shift knob

and a plenum for the larger throttle body wich is going to be a great addition to the headers !
the engine will not receive much more modifications, maybe an underdrive pulley and a tune and that will be it !

now ... i'm waiting
