I like those wheels JJ - they would finish the car IMHO. The only danger I see is adding $$ to what you already have invested.
Are you aware of the PCA DE at R.A. May 28th. I think you might get some interest if you just showed up so folks can see what you have created. Just hanging around the pits with your car might work - no need to enter the event. I'll probably go up (depending on my next surgery) to watch a buddies $100 K plus 914 / LS 7 (750 HP) creation fly around the track. It is a bad ass racer car. If I'm able maybe we can hook up somewhere in Alpharetta and do the follow me routine - assuming I can keep up :) Randy |
Thanks Randy,
Yeah seeing as how I can get a discount on them i'll probably bite the bullet and get them, then have my factory wheels refinished and sell them. I knew there was an event coming up but haven't really looked into it. I'll have to check it out and see if I can just sign up for one day and give the car a shakedown before I try and see how fast it goes :D Thanks! J |
******************** .. just saw this on sale .. man .. I would be interested except I think I would have a hell of a time getting it legalized here in the commie carb-ifornia state.

I'm not sure of the process in Cali, but the car in completely legal here in Georgia, has catalytic converters and everything. All you do here is roll up to the emissions station and point them towards the OBD2 port in the trunk rather then the one under the dashboard. Done and done :D Thanks! J |

Greetings all,
I've been pretty busy lately and haven't had much of a chance to update this thread, but still making progress on the ol' sled. Seems like it has been going on for weeks but looks like I've finally finished up my cold air box this weekend. What a PITA! If you guys are planning on doing a cold air box which I highly recommend, then I suggest doing it while the engine is OUT!!! After weeks of trial and error looks like I've got a finished working box, which ain't the prettiest thin out there but it is strong and functional which is what I was going for. I can post up some pictures if you're interested in seeing it, but as-is part of it is in the car and I'm not pulling it back out just to take pictures of it!! :) Also have an oil cooler setup on the way which will be nice to add a bit more cooling and capacity to the oil system. I'll get pictures of that setup but look pretty straight forward. Last but not least in preparation for the 1/2 mile drag event I'm going to I've got a new set of wheels and tires on order, decided to go with the BBS SR's which I hope will look good. Those should be here by the end of the week and i'll definitely post pictures once they are on! If anyone is interested in the factory wheels from my car I'm going to have them refinished and sell them to whoever may need a set, what's a fair price for a set of 17" twist wheels refinished - $800? Or I could sell them as is if you need some spare track wheels. Thanks J |
Your 17 inch wheels are actually worth a lot of money in their current condition. The spec Boxster boys want to run square and will pay top dollar for your rear rims in any condition as long as they're not bent.

Car is dirty... but the wheels are clean!
Hey everyone,
A little something just arrived today and couldn't help it... w00T w00T! Whaddaya think?!!?! http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1461193541.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1461193586.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1461193632.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1461193713.jpg Annnnd of course a quickie video which should be available shortly! https://youtu.be/Dml5GJtIw9w Thanks J |
I'm considering a build like this, I just sold my LS6, G50, 996 Suspension, 1973 Porsche 914.
I'm wondering how the car handle around the track given the new power-plant ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mqj6l-49wAI |
Love the wheels!! If I ever wanted to go aftermarket, these would be a great choice.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
Perfection - those wheels look super - great choice.
Are you still going to Clayton? You ought to drive up to Road Atlanta at the end of the month to show your car at the Chin DE. I bet there will be some folks attending that will be very interested in your car. I'm planing to go up Saturday to see my buddy run his 700 HP LS powered 914 - it is a crazy build - one of those spare no cost builds. |
Oh yeah I don't think I have commented on the race / sports exhaust - AWESOME
|
Thanks everyone! I'm pretty happy overall and would highly recommend the setup!

Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions! Quote:

I was thinking about going up to the Mitty this weekend but hadn't planned on anything else at this point. I've gotten myself pretty busy lately so I'm just trying to make sure everything is done on my car so I can go fast safely and time is running out. I am still trying to get the car tuned before I go out there too. I'm sure your buddy's 914 is a hoot :) Quote:
|
JJ if your intent is to market the car I think the Chin event is a better venue than the Mitty - but I may be wrong :)
I have attended the Mitty so many times I can't count them and from my observations it isn't a place to sell a modern hot rod. Those folks are interested in "old" hot rods. The free time is spent working on their cars to get ready for the next session. Chin on the other hand is loaded with big bucks guys. There is a lot of down time between sessions and the guys typically don't do much to their cars when they are waiting - they roam the paddock and drool over others cars. I'd be shocked if you don't have some serious interest. But again I may be wrong :D If you decide to run up for the Chin DE let me know so we can possibly hook up. |
Quote:
I should probably go to the Chin event because I really should sell the car before I spend to much on it :D Plus that was the original plan for the car but since I got signed up for the half mile event I've been focusing more on getting the car done and enjoying it! Got almost 4,000 miles on the conversion now so I think most of the bugs are worked out and I'm just really fine tuning it. Got the car at the shop today and going to give it a once over and do some preventative maintenance, clean the air filter, and swap out the axles for a new set just in case. I haven't had any problems with them since I installed the spacers, but for what they cost it is totally worth it to install a new set rather then to risk having a problem that would disable the car. Keep the ones that are in there as spares. I'll do some digging on the Chin event and see if I can make it. Thanks! J |
Hi John,
if you still want to sale, maybe it's a good idea to get the car promoted on YouTube. For example in the smoking tyre channel of Matt Farah: https://www.youtube.com/user/TheSmokingTire Check the OneTake channel there. Regards, Markus |
Thanks Markus, i'll look into that! It's funny though because the Wanna Go Fast people just sent me an email yesterday and they have a professional video crew at the event and are selling video packages at the 1/2 mil drag event. It's not cheap but may be worth it in the long run. Prices start at $300 for a 1 minute video and go up to $1500 for a 4 minute one. At $300 I think I could make it happen but I dunno, what do you guys think?

Cold air box - full update
Greetings everyone,
Finally got some time to finish up the cold air box and make a little video. The process involved much trial and error, initially I tried to use a portion of the factory box and modify it but it was much harder to do then expected so I started from scratch. The box itself is just that, a cardboard box! Since I had gotten so handy with he fiberglass making my rear firewall I started off by using masking tape and wrapping up the entire box, then I covered it in several layers of fiberglass. Did some basic measuring and cut out the 4" hold for the intake pipe to fit. Then used took some small pieces of wood to make the mounting points for the two halves and used resin to mount them to the box with. Then cut the box in half! Made the port to pit into the side of the car with more cardboard and some extra fiberglass to make the mounting tab. Aside from finishing it off with primer and high temp paint that was about it for that half. The other half basically got the same treatment but with an additional layer of 2000* heat protection which I also used on the rest of the intake pipe as well to help keep things cool. It definitely made a difference... DUH! I should have taken some before and after intake temp readings but lets be honest, that filter was literally sitting no more then 2-3 inches from the exhaust manifold before, now it is closed off and getting just fresh air from the outside so i'm certain it made a difference! I appreciate you all following along, let me know if you have any questions! Thanks! Nice job on the air-box
$300 one minute video  - well I'd buy a go pro and make my own video from inside the car. About the same $$ and you will have the camera for future video's - just a thought. |
Hi John,
don't agree with JRL. For 300 bucks you can rent or buy a GoPro and do it yourself, but this won't be a professional looking video. But i also wouldn't spend money for that. My advice is to get the car into professional YouTube channels or car magazines and let them to the video filming, photos and promotion for you. If your car is outstanding they will take it. It's a win win situation. Just talk to them and show them what you've done - some text, some photos, maybe your YouTube description videos, or a link to this thread. If they're interested, you will have good promotion and they will have good content. Regards, Markus |
New Tires and rims?
You stated that you had 17" rims on the car. If so did you go up to 18" and did that help the short first gear any??

very sweet build!! love the fact that it looks stock.

Axles replaced
In your video I noticed ,that you said you are replacing axles again. I was wondering did you find stronger ones or are you still having problems with them? Thanks

I have not decided to shell out big bucks for axles yet as they are like $1000+ and I was not yet convinced they are the problem. Although now I have about 3,300 miles on the set I just pulled out and they did have signs of wear, so stronger axles could be something to look in to. For now I have been using the aftermarket FEQ axles which are AMAZINGLY CHEAP!!! My shop cost on a brand new ones is like $66 each :p For anyone who questions if it is worth it to spring for new Porsche axles the answer is HECK NO! FEQ's work great on the V8 car so they should last forever on a stock one. The axle spacers have done an amazing job and those are a must, if not you will likely break them like I did so make sure you have those. So I also got a new oil cooler for the car which I installed today! I gotta run now but i'll post a few pictures when I get back. Thanks! J |
Greetings all,
So I felt the oil was probably not as cool as I would like it to be so I decided to buy a cheap oil cooler kit off Ebay and give it a shot. I am pleasantly suprised at what a good kit it is! The kit came with everything necessary, although to make it work for my application I ended up shortening one of the hoses and changing the fitting from a straight fitting to a 90* swivel. I didn't take any pictures of the kit but included a pic from the auction I bought it from. Seems to be a knockoff of the Lingenfelter kit although I don't know who came up with the design, seems to work well though. I made 2 brackets to mount the cooler which I welded to the main engine crossbar and located it on the passenger side, basically where the A/C would be, but at this point I'm not pulling the motor to try and get Renegade's crooked ass bracket to work right, so an oil cooler works well there! I may build a small scoop and rock guard for it, but otherwise I'm pretty happy with it! The kit also uses pretty big -10 AN lines so between the lines and the cooler it added about 1.5 extra quarts of oil so I'm pretty happy about it. If you've got any questions just let me know! Thanks J http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1462413249.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1462413265.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1462413285.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1462413303.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1462413322.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1462413599.jpg |
Hello John,
nice work as always. I think a rock guard is a good idea, because oil is important and the front tyres can raise and throw small stones and gravel on a cooler positioned like that. Regards, Markus |
Thanks Markus!
It is tucked up pretty well where hopefully it only gets air and no rocks but better to be safe then sorry! I'm going to use some of the wire mesh I used for the firewall and make a guard and perhaps a small scoop to help guide the air into it a bit better. I'll try and make a video next time I open it up. Thanks! J PS for anyone in the southeast who is interested in checking out the car i'll have it at the Wanna Go Fast 1/2 mile drag race event next weekend the 14th in Clayton, GA. Come on by and check it out! |
Working on some stickers for this weekend...
So I decided I needed to flair up the ol' V8 car a bit and talked with a few graphics companies who all seem to be dragging ass so I decided to try and make my own!
Right now what you see on the car is just cardboard taped onto it, the finished product will be done in fluorescent green vinal! Here are a few ideas, whaddaya think? http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1462791637.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1462791662.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1462791713.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1462791744.jpg |
Not going to be a Sleeper with those graphics any longer.
|
cool idea..., i guess soundwise it will never be a sleeper, even in neutral, so no need to keep it completely "undercover".
A decent red V and a silver 8, next to a silver Boxster emblem would be my cup of tea, but I am old school. People should look twice to get the hint :D |
I like the side graphics but not the rear so much.

JJ you know a proper "Race Car" has roundels - you need nice lime green ones - at least on the doors - possibly the hood and trunk too. :)

the V8 centered under Boxster probably would look best, but dang, there is the spoiler  ... i start to like the green the more i look at it :D |

I definitely dig the ideas so keep em coming! |
Possible dream race this weekend!
So I almost forgot to mention that I just confirmed today that there will in fact be a Porsche 918 at the WannaGoFast 1/2 mile drag race this weekend!!
I've put the word out and called him out for a race through his shop so we will see! I know he'll smoke my ass but just to line up with him and have his pass me at full tilt will be amazing to see!!!! :p  Hope to see you all there! J |
Hi John,
because the car now has an american muscle and rumble – and is some kind of hot rod – how about a very simple: http://www.hansen-styling-parts.de/W...machine_A4.jpg All the URL stuff you can put on the number plate holders (if you have some). 918 - hm, maybe he wins, but your car will sound better. :D ;) Regards, Markus |
Greetings all,
I know I posted this in a separate thread, but wanted to make sure it was attached here as well~ Well semi-successful day at the Wanna Go Fast event in Clayton, GA today! I'm not sure if anyone else has run a Boxster at these type of events so I'll unofficially say I have the worlds fastest Boxster!! Although I know there are a few out there badder then mine i'm sure! I was able to get 4 runs in until I broke the brand new axles :D DOH!!! I was expecting it, hence the reason I trailered the car to the event rather then drove it! Even brought spare axles but it was to late to bother trying to repair it trackside. If nothing else I'm a consistent driver!! Run 1 vs. 928 - 141.3317 mph - WIN Run 2 vs. 2014 SVT Mustang - 142.0455 mph - WIN Run 3 - vs. 498 RWHP C6 Corvette - 142.4953 mph - LOSS :( Got me by 3 MPH but it was neck and neck! Run 4 - vs. 2017 Stage 3 Roush Mustang 670+ HP - 142.4953 mph!!!! - LOSS :( Dude hit 150.1 GOOD JOB! Not too shabby for something he just bought off the showroom floor and is still under warranty!! So if you look at runs 3 & 4 - That's no typo!! Back to back 142.4953!!! WooHoo! All 4 runs averaged to be within .29 MPH of each other - I'd take the Pepsi challenge against the PDK anyway with those numbers ;) Hopefully the videos came out OK - Of course the best race vs. the vet I don't think I turned on the camera. Wanna ride shotgun in the Boxster LS376/480 for a full 1/2 mile?!?!? - Well then here ya go! https://youtu.be/IQnfV9x5uGA http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1463272926.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1463272940.jpg OH YEAH! Just in case you guys don't think racing like this is exciting or dangerous - tell that to this poor little guy!! http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1463273034.jpg Yeah that is stuck as F about 150 feet down a hill off the end of the runway - Racing is dangerous kids!!! |
