Changed the air filter

Today was the first time I did maintenance to Dieter. Time to improve the breathing and went to Pelican to get the filter.

Put the top in the service position and took out the subwoofer, carpet and metal covers. Very dirty and I am torn about cleaning as I read somewhere that there is a protective coating on the engine that can be washed away with cleaners.
Any truth to that?

27,000 miles way to many for my taste. I bought the car about 2 months ago and finally changed the filter.

Thought so. Inside compartment looked a little different from mine but still not 986. I have 05 by the way.

When I saw my engine compartment, I couldn't help but wipe it down a little with a dry cloth. Can anyone answer if its any big deal to wash off the protected coating cosmoline?
