Greetings,
I just wanted to take a second to introduce myself. I have been lurking here for a while, but have finally taken the plunge. I am the proud owner of a slightly used, 2000 Boxster S, 30K miles, tiptronic. I think the car has every option but parking assist and rain sense wipers. After I sold my ZR-1 Corvette, I went on a 6 month search before finding this beauty in Cincinnati. So a few hundred miles later, it is back in KC with my wife and me.
I look forward to spending time learning about the Boxster, and getting to know some of the forum members.

My ZR-1 was a 91. I really enjoyed the car but was just ready for something different. The car had unbelievable power though. It could literally do 50 mph burn outs, not that I would know.... :rolleyes:

I paid right around $30K for the Boxster. I was a 2nd owner car, window sticker was $77K new. It is fully documented with all service history. The local dealer was very helpful with disclosing all of the records after the owner agreed.

The previous owner is really a good guy. He even threw in his hard top hoist, 2nd set of floor mats, and a key ring. They were selling it because of their baby on the way. Don't feel too bad for them though, the new Cayenne S sitting in the drive is a decent replacement.

So what do you think of driving the Box after owning a ZR1? They are both excellent cars, but for such different reasons. What are your impressions of both? What made you go for the Boxster instead of a Z06?

Wow, $77K for a Boxster in 2000!! That would be an expensive Boxster in today's standard too. You don't see many 987's that go over $70K

Additionaly, the hard top and the 18" sport classic wheel upgrade helped push the price up. I'm not sure I trust the option decoder because the car has a three spoke steering wheel, CD changer, and digital sound.

I drove a 91 ZR1 once. It cracked me up. I was scootin' around town -trying to break it loose and was mildly impressed. That's when I found out it was in "Valet Mode." After FIXING that, the smile on my face was quite large. That car was a contender I tell ya.

I looked at a Z06 and test drove several. At the time, I still had my Z. The c5 was much more refined than the c4 in most ways. I decided to wait until the c6 Z06 came out to get a better deal on a clean c5. In the mean time, we spent some time in Europe with a BMW 530i and I really fell in love with the feel of the car. We decided to upgrade my wife’s car and drove the X5, XC90, Cayenne S, and the Touareg. We decided on the Touareg (V8) and that started me down the path of the German engineered cars. After driving several boxsters and one 911, I was hooked. What I gave up in power is more than made up for in handling, style, and finish.

Congrats on the purchase. I love the overhead shot in the first pic...very nice.

Martini Racing Stripes on a Porsche are a fond childhood memory of mine.
If I ever get a white Porsche I'm going to order up some decals for the track.

New to the group as well, just acquired this '97 in Colorado. Just 9700 miles on it. Seems owner had several other Porsches and decided to part with this one.[IMG]

what did you pay for a almost 9 year old car with less than 10,000 miles?
I see Carrera 5 spokes and tasty side skirting in your future. :D

Gorgeous red color! Am I mistaken or is that a fairly rare color?

You need to check your car for the old top transmission cables. The new ones have a diamond pattern on them, showing reinforcement underneath the plastic. If you have records from the dealer, this should have been done under warranty in 99. If not, you should have them replaced asap to avoid the clamshell twisting up and causing damage that a dollar amount with a comma in it will require.

Don't freak out over this... it's probably been done.

Where are these cables, you ask?

Drop your top half way down where the clamshell is up. Look about two inches below the back of where the clamshell meets the bodywork and look for a cable that comes from a motor in the middle of the car, near the third brake light. This is your top motor and it has two cables that go around the edge toward the transmissions, which are both located above your exterior vents, but inside the top mechanism's area (hope that makes sense, it's the best I can do).

The cables may be dusty or dirty and you can wipe one off a little and look for the diamond pattern.

Gorgeous car. Enjoy it every day you can and by all means, drive it hard. The car actually smiles inside when you push it near the redline and corner hard in it.

PS - 18's are not recommended on 97's, but you can probably do it anyway if you don't plan to track your car or really be brutal with it on the streets. There are lots and lots of 97's out there with 18's on them and they've experienced no body or suspension problems whatsoever.

I'm with ya, most cars look worse with the top down, the Boxster in my opinion looks BETTER :p
