PLASTIDIPED thread

So I want all the people who plastidiped a part of their car to put their photos in this thread.
Also discuss technique and results.

Intakes shrouds and wheels...nothing fancy, just 5 coats of black, no glossifier(wanted a flat/matte look).
A good thorough washing was the only prep.

One tip: clean the nozzle before each coat to prevent globbing. Use a pin or other small pointed object to peel the dry material off of the nozzle, then turn can upside down and spray for a few seconds to clear it out. Never rub anything on the nozzle as this will just force material into it causing a clog.
Also, hit the hard to get to areas first...and somewhat heavy(lug holes and outer edge of the wheel).

Another tip: the colder the environment, the more smooth the finish will be. I found this out thanks to our wonderful Missouri weather. When I did my first wheel, it was only about 40°f outside and in my garage(was open for air circulation). The finish on that one came out very smooth. When I got around to doing wheel #2 the next week, it was about 65 to 70°f outside and in my garage. The coats dried much faster and had a slightly more textured appearance. I ended up peeling the first one and doing over in the warmer weather as I preferred the slightly more textured look.

Nice particlewave. I did my rims in 68-72degree weather so it was cool. I only sanded one of my rims which had bubbled paint. I used 80 grit wet sand paper and worked some areas to metal to get a smooth surface. I did not do the whole rim as can be seen in the pictures just the parts that needed sanding. I recommend sanding noticeable imperfections on the rim before plastidiping to get a better result.

To anyone reading this who hasn't applied the plastidip yet, make sure you put a lot of layers on. When you think you've put enough, put another 2-3.

I thought I had enough on and now I'm having a difficult time peeling it off the wheels. The thicker the coating, the easier it will be to remove.

As to why I'm taking it off: I had my car on a flatbed and the wheel straps used to secure it to the bed ripped the coating right off. Then, when the shop was replacing my tire, even more of it came off, so much so that I have to take all of it off or else it would look silly.

I'm either going to redo the plastidip, powdercoat the wheels, or bring them back to stock to sell it.

That's funny...I've been looking at a 2005 Elise. I'm a little put off by how cheap the interior looks, though.

I think of Boxsters like luxury semi-gokarts and Elises like full gokarts. You sacrifice the comforts for a more visceral experience.

On the side note I do like the Elise Its a much more eventful car and it cost more as well. More eye grabbing. Its also so small. I parked my car next to one and it was significantly lower.

I just did my fixed gear bike in the antrhacite color. I added a few coats of gloss. But now its really 'sticky'. Not a smooth finish. Anyone else notice this?

Yes the gloss is extra sticky. After a good wash with some car wash soap it should be good.

not great but not as sticky.

You will love the Lotus Elise I have had my 2006 four years now and Love it. I just had my Volvo S40 wheels plasti diped today, and the windows tinted. Car turned out great.

The shop I took it to also did entire cars, has anyone had their Boxster plasti dipped? If so,how did it turn out?

Thats exactly how i want my car to look. Looks so mean with the tints. Awesome job!
