Boxster upgrade wih 911-996, 18 inch wheels
 

I am interested in upgrading my boxster wheels with larger, more aggresive 911 porsche wheels. I have read posts of people adding 18 wheels and spacers from a 911 996 onto a 986 boxster. The 911 996 wheels are wider, 18 x 10, than the original boxster ones, 18 x 9, may look more sporty due to the wider tires, and will retain the porsche curves and overall look on the boxster. Does anyone have pictures of their boxster 986 with the 996 18 inch wheels that they could post or send me before I decide on the upgrade? Thanks.

One thing you want to avoid is having to put huge spacers on the back to accommodate 911 wheel offsets. There are all sorts of 911 styled wheels out there (same widths) that have boxster offsets and require no spacers.

Spacers really amplify any wheel imbalance or tire out-of-round that is present or develops over time, and have been known to cause premature wheel bearing wear (read $$$). If you can buy rims that don't require them for your application, you'll be happier in the long run.

BTW, I run 7mm or 1/4 inch spacers all the way around on my rims because I have them and decided to use them. They are optional though.

The pictures of both cars with the new wheels look very nice. I checked out the website. I'll be careful with the wheel spacers and look for updated wheels that don't use spacers. Thanks everyone!!!

I was thinking the same thing.. My 99 came with 17's and I wanted factory 18's at first.. I ended up with aftermarket 19's that look great and didn't need spacers..

I would think: If the edge(s)/contact patch of your wheel and tire is further away from your wheel bearing location, you will have an inherently higher moment about said bearing....bigger wheels will give you the same moment loading as spacers. Bigger wheels are a much cleaner arrangement though..
