Boxilla Lives

Had this '97 Boxster that was beautiful. It's name was BOXILLA. TechArt wheels, splitters, winglet, steering wheel, B&B exhaust.

A woman gabbing on her cell phone rearended me at a stoplight without even braking. Destroyed all the sheet metal from the cowl back.

So I bought it back from the insurance company for next to nothing and built a just-have-fun-track car with a 917-ish fiberglass rear panel, carbon hood, center ducted radiator, diffuser and exhaust. Did all the fiberglass and metal fab myself. This took a year and a half. Next addition is a full cage.

Ready for test and tune at Willow and Auto Club Speedway.

Who's front bumper is that on Boxilla ?

spongebob 11-01-2009 12:00 PM

I think I saw Boxilla some years ago outside S D when you passed me in the left lane (hwy 5) honking at me. But I remember another color ,was it green? on the car.
Anyway, nice project!

Cool project, any idea about the downforce you are generation on the rear end? It looks like you have a lot of time into the project. Do you have a sense of how the weight of the rear end changed with the mods? Should be fun on the track,

Ed

It is TA knock-off that I bought off of eBay. It gave me huge intakes for the side radiators and one for the added center radiator.

Thanks. It's always been black and speed yellow. I am in SD a lot.

Can't wait to get it on the track this coming weekend to see whether all of the aerodynamics, which are just educated guesses at this point, will pan out at really high speeds. I did drive it on the freeway on a one day moving permit from DMV. It felt like it was really hunkered down. Curves on the back side of Mount Palomar on SR 76 felt good too. Car felt balanced. Amazing fun!!!

jmunoa 11-01-2009 06:03 PM

By the way, your yellow Boxster is very cool!

Frodo 11-01-2009 08:20 PM

I took this shot at the auto show at the Glenmoor Country Club (Canton, OH) a couple years back.

Odds are there are even more "Boxilla"s out there...

About $50 to $100 extra a year.

navair 11-03-2009 03:44 PM

Bring that bad boy to the Porsche Club AX at the stadium (there's one this Sunday)!

Love the PCA people. Used to run in the PCA autocross at the stadium till I found Redline and Speed Ventures. Don't have to work corners! 5 half hour run sessions! Willow-Buttonwillow-Cal Speedway! You'd love it.

Valor 11-04-2009 05:32 AM

Cool very worth it IMO, we can't get that here in singapore :(

I hear that outside of the vanity plate thing, Singapore is a pretty amazing place.

Finally got BOXILLA to the track at Fontana Auto Club Speedway on November 20th. No weirdness. Cornered great. It felt really planted at 130mph on the fast part of the Roval. Great fun!!!

jmunoa 12-05-2009 08:54 PM

Starting on the full roll cage in the next few weeks. Should be done by January!

jmunoa 12-09-2009 09:39 PM

More photos at Fontana on Nov 20! It was a perfect day. Sunny and cool. No crashes or fluid spills!!! No down time. Thanks to Speed Ventures and Caliphotography.

Cage For Boxilla

Well we were supposed to do this in January, but Aaron V, who builds our cages was so busy that I couldn't get this done til now!

Added a cage and removed the A pillar frame to make a Lotus 2 Eleven/917 Spyder look.

Boxilla At Willow

Boxilla at Willow before the roll cage addition.

Last Track Day Before Cage

This was my last day at Willow before the Boxilla was caged.

Baby Brother For Boxilla

I sold my 2006 987S. I got bored on the street. So I picked up this 2003 986S and put a set of my TechArts on it. Have H&R springs and B&B exhaust for it. Haven't installed yet.

Boxilla Cage Photos

More Boxilla cage photos. Actually painted the bars satin black yesterday after these photos were taken. Can't wait to get the body panels back on. We left about 6 inches of A-pillar to make a stubby wind screen. Here's the front.

jmunoa 07-10-2010 09:44 PM

Back

Here's the back

jmunoa 07-29-2010 09:36 PM

Caged!

So here are photos of BOXILLA's cage. Also, used the original A-pillars and made a stubby 5-inch tall Lexan windscreen. Now the next project will be "finish" body work and a full wrap.

jmunoa 07-29-2010 09:42 PM

See the full TRANSMOGRIFICATION of BOXILLA!

Here's the rear view. Gotta add new mirrors before the next track day. You can see the TRANSMOGRIFICATION of BOXILLA at:

H&Rs for Boxilla's Baby Brother

Finally put the H&R springs on my street car. Not harsh. Nice cornering. Way better stance.

Lobo1186 08-28-2010 11:16 AM

how much those set you back? and are those 18's?

18" TechArt Formulas. They're about $800 ea. H&R spring set is about $300.

Install is free if you do it yourself, but NOT a job for amateurs. A shop would charge about $1200 for install. And new alignment is essential.
