The ultimate porsche ??
I know these were one mean machine and very expensive. However, some say this is the best Porsche made. The 968 Turbo.
Any comments ? |
Best production front engine Porsche made
There are several rear and mid engine cars which Porsche made which are superior in my mind. One that stands out is 959.

I was always the fan of the 924,944, and 968 turbos. Growing up I preferred these cars over the 911s. Even though these were front engine, they were positioned further behind the front axle for optimum handling. As with the boxster today, the 944 and 968 "could" outperform the 911. I was considering a 944 turbo before discovering that Boxsters have become quite affordable.

I just love the 968. Someday, I will find the coupe I am looking for. |
The 968 Turbo CS was a fantastic car... 300-305 hp, I think just under 3,000lbs. Extremely well balanced. Not sure how many were available for ROW markets - maybe 100?
The racing version, the 968 Turbo RS (of which only 4 were made) are even more impressive... 350-400hp (depending on boost/regulations) and that same great handling balance. Bruce Corwin of NER PCA had one of the 4.. Bought it from a VW dealer in Germany after its racing career was over. Heard he paid "mid 40K".. for a 1 of 4 ever made factory race car! Insane.. I know he sold it.. for more than twice what he paid. Anyway.. that car was fast.. equally as fast as 993 Cup cars. "Best" Porsche made? Waaaayy too subjective a comment. A great car? absolutely. |
Too bad they never offered the 968 turbo in the USA. As long as I can remember, Powerhaus has been boosting the 944 and they have the kit for 968 as well. Would be nice to get a 968 and boost it. As Porsche expands it's model line, maybe one day they will come create a front engine rear drive platform again. I heard somewhere that the Cayenne now accounts for half of all Porsche sales.
