Light or dark brown particles are varicam glides/pads. They can be replaced by taking off the cam covers. Some have done that with the engine in car but most drop the engine and replace.

Some people spray paint them black so they are hard to see when installed. I'm thinking that if anyone knows what the red clip does they will be more apt to see red than black. Hence, I left mine red!

Checking the oil cap in the trunk is a good test before the oil filler tubes crack and leak. If they are cracked and leaking there is no vacuum to keep you from unscrewing the oil cap.
