That lip you mentioned is the strut. The struts are held in by the swaybar end links. Try sliding the knuckle up and down on the strut to get the swaybar endlink in place.

Thanks, A buddy of mine at work solved my starter motor problem. I'm going to mount the starter to the front of the engine and run the bendix down between the intake and the exhaust to the flywheel....
