Pretty sure it's not the fans because I can hear the fans kick in when I turn on the AC. I can hear them in additon to the whine. They aren't nearly as loud and sound smooth.

That's right. However, my 97 has had 15w-50 (the oil that came in it) in it since it was built and it hasn't had a problem yet.

15w-50
I use 15w-50. It comes in the large jugs for cheap. My mechanic (Been working on and racing Porsches since 1970) uses it and says that's what originally came in the Boxster.

Go buy your oil at Walmart. You can get the 5 quart jugs for like $23.00 each. Then order your OEM filter and crush ring from Suset Imports for $12.04 and .22 respectively. It'll end...
