When I replaced my rear strut I left the drive shaft in the hub. I just undid the flange at the tranny. It allowed things to drop enough to get things in and out.

It sure looks to me to be some sort of cover to hide the fact that the soft top has been removed. Look at the gaps and how it lays. There is nothing underneath (well no soft top that is).
