problem solved
The proper term is radio faceplate, not radio dial, and the faceplate is removable! Once I learned that, I flipped it down (step one in removing it) and firmly flipped it back up and the dial lit...

radio dial does not light up
The radio works, but the dial stays black. Can't tell what it is doing just have to punch a button and wait. Fuse problem?

Winter storage, battery question
For 3 months storage with no electric available, is it best to dis-connect the battery or just leave it connected after giving it a full charge and hope it makes it through the 3 months? Why can't...
