Cayman Transmission Howl????

I have a 2007 Base Cayman that has developed a howl between 45 and 65 mph but only when I let off the accelerator. The howl is of the same pitch regardless of the gear I am in and goes away (almost) when I push in the clutch. It seemed to be a ring and pinion howl type of sound but here is the odd thing.... if I am traveling at 60 mph in neutral there is no howl and if I pull the shifter over to the second gear position and pull it back, but not back enough to engage the gear, the howl appears.... I can turn the howl on and off as fast as I can pull the shifter back and forward. It is the same howl, same pitch, and is decreasing in loudness as the car slows down. I can't put my mind around how by pulling back on the shifter while in neutral...... it creates ring and pinion howl!!!??? By the time the care is going 40 the howl is gone (almost). Any ideas? 23,000 miles on the car.
