I want to modify the electronics of my car, how to do it without dying in the attempt

Hi guys.

I'm starting this new thread because I think it's a topic that will interest many of you.

The goal is to allow anyone who wants to modify their car's electronics to do so safely and confidently, without causing any problems.

Throughout this post, I'll be discussing some brands. I want to make it clear that I'm a distributor for Dimsport, but they don't pay me or give me anything for free. I'll share both the good and bad points about their company—all true, but always based on my opinion and experience from 25 years of business dealings. The same applies to the other companies I mention.

Let's begin:

The first thing we need to do is read the maps.

We have two options: via OBD or by removing the ECU, desoldering the memory chip, and reading it with a desktop programmer.

I recommend OBD; it's non-invasive, fast, and clean. Desoldering and soldering the memory chip requires skill and a suitable workspace.
Keep in mind that an ESD discharge caused by a bag of apples left by your brother-in-law on the kitchen counter where you're working can kill the ECU.

If you still decide to proceed with this method, make sure you have a decent desktop programmer and, above all, a socket!

Before touching the flash memory, mark the position of pin 1. This is always marked with a dot on the memory chip.
If not, by reading the silkscreen, pin 1 is the bottom left pin.

Also note that there are no free pins; it's a PSOP44, meaning 44 pins.

Sometimes there are 48, 50, or 52 pins, and the memory is offset. If so, mark its exact position. A picture is worth a thousand memories.

I have to pick up my daughter, we'll continue later.

Sorry for the delay, let's continue:

If we've read via OBD, we should have something similar to this header:

Versión del archivo:
Nombre del proceso generador: FLASH_0048
Versión protocolo: 6.011 - 2.003
Fecha del archivo: 27/09/2017
Hora del archivo: 17:09.35
Marca: PORSCHE
Modelo: 996
Tipo: 3.4L CARRERA 221kW/296HP ME7.2
Protocolo: FLASH_0048 PORSCHE ME7.2
Hardware Nr.: 0261204790
Software Nr.: 1037357109
Fecha Hardware:
Fecha Software:
Chasis: WP0ZZZ
Versión del software:
Número recambio: 99661860500
Número motor:
Versión del hardware:
Software Upgrade Nr.: 0041570264303603
Número de identificación unívoca:
Tipo de sistema: ME7.2

From this information, what interests us is the hardware, software, and especially the software upgrade. These three values allow us to know exactly which firmware our DME uses.

One clarification: An ECU with hardware code 0261204791 has been recognized for 90 different firmware versions to date, so do not exchange files between cars

(Sorry, when I have a moment I'll look into how to upload images like other people do.)

. Also, note that the VIN is stored in the flash memory.

If we've desoldered the flash memory and read it with a desktop programmer, we only have two options:

If the programmer gives us the file's checksum, cross our fingers; if not, then we can use software like WinHex to find the sw number.

The sw number in units from this period always start with 10373....
