Does anyone know of a free catalogue of Boxster parts and their prices?

Adam 02-23-2004 04:15 PM

Tweeks^.....kinda expensive.

Tool Pants 02-23-2004 08:38 PM

What is it you want to look up?

Alienz 02-24-2004 02:56 PM

The remote control part of the key.

Tool Pants 02-24-2004 09:38 PM

The entire key head? Sample pic.

yup toll pants that's the one

Tool Pants 02-24-2004 10:06 PM

What year?

Alienz 02-24-2004 10:15 PM

1997, i got a new theft control unit and need a new remote control. they dont have the serial for the one i currently have so i have to get a new one.

Tool Pants 02-24-2004 10:25 PM

Do you mean you do not have the paper tag with the 24 digit code for your remote keys? I thought there was a way to get the code out of your old unit and transfer them to the new unit - but I would have to check the shop manual so I could be wrong.

1997 is different from all other years. Part number should be 986 637 243 01 with a full retail of about $130. Double check with your parts dept.

Tool Pants 02-24-2004 10:40 PM

I looked at the manual and I may not understand what I read.

But is says that when you replace the control unit the PST2 can read out the code and then the code can be inputed/transfered into the new unit and that way you do not have to replace the remotes. Also says you have to input the code correctly the first time because if you make a mistake then you cannot use the old remotes.

Alienz 02-24-2004 11:06 PM

The exact thing i was told by my mechanic. I'm missing the tag witht he code. He showed me an audi key that has the same feqtures and such. I can buy a used remote from ebay and it will work on my car i have the correct serial. We don't at this point for my key. Towards the end of our conversation, the guy told me something about programing the "key" or soemthing. I was so confused I didnt even ask, he said that the key had to be programed. He told me he was confused himself and what not. They are Porsche and they promised to give me my car back in a perfect condition. Our Porsche dealer here is so professional. They ddint give me the BS the other mechanic did. They even told me to bring me to bring parts from the outside if I wanted too. And they could put it on. They actually said that to me and am so surprised that Porsche dealers would do such a thing.

Alienz 02-24-2004 11:10 PM

PS: they tried to read my older unit but they were not successful. It was badly burned.

I love that Porsche computer. You can plug any unit into this thing and it will tell you stuff.

Tool Pants 02-24-2004 11:44 PM

I bought a used 1997 5 years ago and I am glad I got the paper tag. Now if I could just remember where I put it.

What do you mean about being burned. Like a fire?

Do not even look at an ebay key head unless it has the tag with the code for that head. The codes are unique and it must be for that head or it is worthless. With a non remote key head, the valet key, there is no tag.

I assume your unit that was replaced was replaced with a 1997 unit. If so, the remote must be for a 1997, as the unit for 1997 is different then all other years. A 1998-2000 remote will not work on a 1997.

The tag.

Alienz 02-25-2004 08:25 AM

The unit shorted and burned out becuase water got in there some how. I'm not sure about the year of the unit but it's brand new. He looked up some info on it and told me that these units are unique and can only be programmed once.

Another question to you Tool Pants: Doesw a brand new "Folding Top Trans" come with the Lever? My motors are fine but the Lever on both sides are broken. But he said to fix the top I need to get 2 new trans one costs $472 and the left one for $421

Tool Pants 02-25-2004 08:35 AM

You probably mean the red plastic ball joint on the end of the push rod since that is known to break for various reasons. Look at this. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=68

Alienz 02-25-2004 01:30 PM

The part circled is what I'm talking about (98656147901/8001). Also I need the rods which come seperately I suppose since they have a different part number (98656127902). I still don't understand why I need to buy a new motor if these are the only things broken.

Tool Pants 02-25-2004 01:46 PM

The V levers and push rods rods are separate parts.

Is there anything on your car not broken?:D

When you say motor - do you mean the top transmissions - one on each side. The picture you posted that I took is the transmission, not the top motor.

Alienz 02-25-2004 02:10 PM

Hehe as for now it's just the top that's messed up. My piece broke off just like the one in the picture, the motor just kept turning and didn't stop which caused it to break. There are also some small parts that are needed like Lock Clip, Threaded Spacer and Plastic Sleeve which I don't know where they are in the pciture.

They said they will charge me $1900 to fix the top but I'm thinking about doing it myself since I have enough instructions thanks to you and the manul I've got. If decide to work on the top by myself, the only I'm worried about is breaking that lever again. The mechanic said that these are timed and should stop when the coloumn is completely closed.

Tool Pants 02-25-2004 02:18 PM

If you want to give it a go then try RennTech as Mark is the top expert - I just turn the wrenches.

Remove and inspect the top transmissions and if they are not damaged then reuse them. I have seen the transmissions from 3 cars with top problems and there was nothing wrong with the transmissions. It is the cables or the plastic joints, or in your case broken V arms. If you are lucky about $200 in parts will have your top like new.

Alienz 02-25-2004 02:46 PM

Mark got a $2000 estimate too! How much did it cost him to fix the top at the end?

http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=1190

Tool Pants 02-25-2004 03:43 PM

Mark and I live near each other. The standard quote from our dealer sight unseen is 2k, as they have seen so many of them.

He replaced the cables and push rods. About $140 in parts if you buy them from Sunset in Oregon.

Alienz 02-25-2004 06:34 PM

I guess the mechanic lied to me about the V lever, he said it comes with the motor only. Little did he know that when he gave me the list of parts needed to fix the top, the V levers are listed seperately.

jfmillr 02-26-2004 05:42 AM

Hey I wanted to mention with this thread that when I had purchased my 2000 986 the dealership gave me two keys to the car that were programmed. I suppose this is normal. However, after taking delivery of the car and looking in the center console I found 2 more keys that were there. Neither of them worked for my car. THey fit in the ignition but since they are not programmed will not start the car. I still have these two keys. I want to keep one of them incase something ever happens, but would be interested in letting one go cheap. The key is brand new. I will locate it this weekend and take a snapshot of it. If someone is interested send me a messege and we can discuss the aquisition.

Tool Pants 02-26-2004 08:19 AM

You should have 3 keys. Look in your owners manual. If you have the remote option on the base or standard on the S then there are 2 remote keys and 1 valet key.

If you have new extra remote key(s) you need to get the paper tag that looks like a bar code.

Alienz 02-26-2004 10:51 AM

Thats cool jfmillr. I'll be interested in it f you have the tag with it.

jfmillr 02-26-2004 02:33 PM

yeah they both have their paper tags still with them. I never got the valet key. I have 2 programmed remotes and 2 unprogrammed remotes.

Tool Pants 02-26-2004 03:34 PM

The remotes from a 1998-2000 will not work on a 1997.

Alienz 03-05-2004 07:23 AM

Tool Pants, have you guys filmed a top fix? It would be great to release it on the next dvd. I'm going to start working on my top next week and I'm a little worried about the timinng issue. When I tried putting the top down the other day ( I knew it wouldn't come down becuase it's broken) only the back coloumn came up. When I tried putting it down, the trans. just kept turning until the V lever broke. It just kept turning until it snapped. Was this a timing issue that caused it to break? I just bought new ones and I don't want to break those too.

Tool Pants 03-05-2004 07:35 AM

A separate section for top problems has been created. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showforum=46 Mark is the timining guy. No DVD as we have not found a local owner yet with a really messed up top.
