LN Spin-On Oil Filter Adapter
It's been a while since this topic has come up, and it's an upgrade I've been considering for quite some time to make DIY oil changes a bit more convenient.
Now that these have been out for a while, can any issues or failures be contributed to their use, given that the filters used don't have a bypass? Thanks! |
IMO, full flow guarantees full filtration. Another benefit is that it helps when IMS grenades or bearing goes. The pressure relief valve will take care of relieving pressure were there blockage of the filter. And you can get synthetic media filters vs the OEM paper filter. All wins to me. I have mine remotely mounted so even more options there like racing filters etc... And I can use a taller filter.

I've had one on my CSS, which is my DE car, for a long time. Felt it was a good idea to have a metal filter if I ever did any agricultural driving. Didn't want to knock off the plastic canister. Last fall I had a constant drip by the oil filter. Would tighten it a bit more and clean it off. Cpl wks later, more drips. I knew the filter was on tight. Got on the LN site and found there was a gasket replacement set for sale. It seals the adapter to the engine block. I looked back at my records - I bought the adapter in 2014. Made sense the gasket had lost it's plumpness in 5+ yrs.
That's the only issue I've had. I would like a longer filter, but not sure what to replace the current one with. |
Maybe in the beginning my LN adaptor wasn't on tight enough but it would spin off when I removed the filter. Doesn't seem to do that the last couple of times but I do get some occasional drips. I'll look into the new gasket thing.

Hadn't heard about the potential to develop the need for a gasket replacement set. I got my spin-on adapter in 2009! No leaks to date, but I guess I better keep an eye on it at this point. (This car has been amazing: since getting it in 2006 I've never seen so much as a drop of oil on the floor where it's parked.) Actually did have one problem, but it wasn't the fault of the SPOFA. Had some work done at a place I've used before and, being in need of an oil change and feeling lazy/too busy, asked them to change the oil/filter for me. Well, whoever did it cranked the ever lovin' hell out of the filter when they put the new one on. Next time I went to do the same task, the adapter came off with the filter, something that had never happened to me before. (I had done all the oil changes since the SPOFA.) I then spent like an hour trying to get them apart—even enlisted the help of a guy working at Advanced Auto. The old filter was thoroughly mangled by the time we got them separated. |
I upgraded to the oil filter adapter and have not looked back. I have a oil filter cutter that makes looking a media a sinch. I run a longer K&N Filter... fits great and plenty of room/ clearance to ground below. Filter is still higher than AL oil pan. I run the HP-2006. You can find them everywhere- even at Wally World. Love the wrench off feature as well... run K&N oil features on all of my vehicles for this very reason.

Great gadget. Why didn't the factory do this? What possible advantage is there to the OEM plastic cup design ?

Oh, there are some VERY entertaining threads on this forum regarding this mod. And it's fun to see that personalities don't change much in 8 year's time, Haha. I see below a comment from az986s about remote mounting it. I'd sure love to know more about THAT. AZ? |

I've had mine for a few years with a magnetic drain plug. No issues and less mess. Put one on my 981 as well.
