Short Squeak on start-up

This just started. On start up AND when accelerating away (or when pushing down the throttle) I hear a very short squeak. Seems to be coming from the right side of the engine? Just put on a new belt...so maybe waterpump?

Saw an old thread that even indicated that it could be a loose sparkplug and air is rushing into the gap. I just cleaned the coil packs so......who knows?!

Did the squeaking start with the new belt?

Noises never end with Boxsters

Hi, sometimes I get a squeak at start up also sounding like a slipping belt and never hear it again while driving.

When I get the squeak at start up I don't get the loose chain noise so many hear.

Anyone have a clue?????????????????????????????????????????????

Belt has been in a couple of months now. Have even done a couple of DE's on it too. Just started last week after putting in the new motor mount. It is always something....isn't it?

Starter's binder. You can replace the starter, or pull it out, take it apart, clean the binder's gunk off, regrease and insert back in. Then reinstall the starter...

Yes I am hearing the squeak at start up, but also under acceleration (from a stop) and acceleration under load (although the squeak is not as pronounced).

Then again, maybe not!

So my 2k 2.7l Boxster started squeaking recently.

Intermittently on startup, then after starting out whether in 1st or reverse - seemingly just as, and just after some engine load.

I took it in to Vancouver West Motors, and they couldn't get it to happen. They checked the belt, and pulleys. Even tried a different belt, no problem. Took it for a "spirited boot" with the covers off, still no sign of it. Spark plugs and AOS are fine.

There was no charge, but I was able to produce the squeak on the third and fourth start for them when I picked it up. They asked me to get back to them on Monday.

It does seem to become more common after I have fun, quick driving and high rpm rev matching.

Any suggestions on a direction to point them?

My brothers 99 2.5L developed a squeak or chirp on one side of the motor after a track session or spirited canyon carving. Definitely internal. Our trusted indy found seriously worn timing chain tensioner guides. 18 hours of labor later the problem is resolved. His car was probably a few thousand miles away from Ka-Boom. Whew! Bullet dodged.

Christ, I hope there's a cheaper and less frightening reason!

My '04 has developed a short squeak on start-up on cold mornings. The car has roughly 45k miles. If I have my indie shop take care of this, does it make more sense to replace it altogether, or clean it and reinstall?

You said: "...replace it altogether, or clean it and reinstall?" What is "it"?

The squeak/sqwuak I thougt emanated from my starter... wasn't. Pulled the starter... inspected... all good.

Sqwuak remained. I figured it was the chain upon a cold start... for with the engine warm... no sqwuak on subsequent warm engine starts.

My sqwuak is gone since I installed my rebuilt alternator, just ~week ago. I do have that chain rattle, but not as prevalent as what it once was.

Take your car to a mechanic and have them listen to the alternator. Could be the front or rear bearings. Could be one of the two idler pulleys... or the tensioner pulley. Have them check those, too. The noise won't get better on it's own. My rebuild out the door was $207... worth it. Car runs quieter than ever it has in the 2 years I've owned it.

Don't leave us hanging. Report back. Cheers!

I would make sure all the spark plugs are tight. I had a chirp on acceleration and that was the problem. It would only do it under load. I could rev the hell out of it in neutral and it wouldn't make the noise. Plus checking them is free.

Thanks. Yeah, I'm only guessing it's the starter because it only happens once when I start it on cold mornings. Later in the day when it's warmer outside, no squeak.
