Engine RPM signal
 

What is the easiest way to tap into engine rpm signal? I am assuming wire tap / crimp type hardware is acceptable.

I am trying to avoid removal of the cluster or would like to make a signal tap connection while the cluster is out so that it does have to come apart again

...okay perhaps there no other way other than to get to the tach signal wire.....is there a good source of information that will confirm which one it is in the cluster harnesses?

PIN number, wire colour, and harness kinda thing.........for 2000.

There is a wire on the ODBII plug that is connected to tach signal. I'll look tomorrow to see which one. I had a wire connected to my Traqmate Datalogger at one time.

Yes that is true.....pretty sure I have seen OBD II shift lights.

I think that this would be the cleanest solution provided provided the proper wire tap hardware is used.....and the OBD wire isn’t screwed up.

Pin#9 on the OBD port. Violet/Green Wire, on my car which is a 2003.

My guess is that CAN bus arrangements will have changed it

there is a schematic for a 7.2 2001 996 on the pelican engine swap page. shows the same as jsceash states - 'tn-signal'. there is also an engine speed signal you can grab, but looks to be a shielded wire so more problematic to tap.
