Sim card slot fault

Can anyone help? I have a 2003 Boxster 2.7. The telephone operates by sliding in your phone SIM card to a slot (on the CD/ Navi system etc). A garage has advised me that a cog has worn / broken in the slot; it is now fixed in the out position and will not stay in. They advise that they will have to replace the whole unit at a cost of about £1500 with VAT and labour.

Its not the greatest phone system in the world any way but, has anyone found an alternatvie way of repairing these?

thanks :ah:
