5w-40 oil

The only 5w-40 Mobil 1 oil I find is for a diesel engine. Where can I find 5w-40 or 5w-50 Mobile 1? I live in Myrtle Beach SC and think I want to use these in stead of 0w-40 that Wal-Mart has. Am I wrong or do I need the 5w oils?

Amazon is one of many sources

Check the Mobil 1 site. They recommend Mobil 1 0-40w for your car.

Today is the last day for the Mobil 1 ,$12/5qt. rebate.

0w-40

I get that 0-w40 is ok but in the owners manual it show that 5w-40 is good for temp ranges above -13F. That would leave me to believe that 0w is for colder than -13F. I can't ever remember it being -13F here. We are lucky to see 10F one day a year so I am wondering if 5w would be better protection on start ups.

0W is fine. It just denotes the lowest temperature viscosity.

You can get Mobil 5W50 (great oil) from Napa Auto Parts. This is where I buy it. Napa runs a sale about 3 times per year. Mobil does a $12 (per case) rebate at least once per year. I buy when I can double-dip.

A guy recommended Royal Purple HPS 10W-40 to me. A case is under $100 on Amazon.

I'm using Liqui-Moly 5w40 (meets Porsche A40), get that from NAPA as occasionally they do the "reserve online for store pick-up and save 10%" promo.

Mobile 1 0w-40 formulation is different than Mobile 1 5w-40. Primarily more Phosphorus & Zinc - the highest concentrations of their regularly available oils.

BMW, Porsche, MB, & VAG approve 0w-40 & it's not just because of weight.

Mobile 1 Specs.

More info.

The Owners manual was written 20 years ago. Much has changed in the oil world since then. The Mobil 1 formulation and particularly it's additive package has had several major changes.
In terms of current Porsche Approval(paid endorsement!) - Mobil 0-40W is one of the the correct oils- unless we know better !

I know we won't use it.

What is the reason to not use 0w-40 Mobil 1? Getting ready to change my oil and that is what I have used. Thanks

Simple: There was a time with M1 products were some of the best, but ever since Exxon acquired Mobil, it has been all down hill. UOA's have continued to show products like their 0W-40 going downhill, falling out of grade much sooner than the original products, loss of film strength, low TBN values after short mileage use, etc. The 0W-40 has also undergone multiple reformulations, none of which made it better; and in fact one actually caused it to totally lose its ACEA performance ratings, which it literally barely got back after yet another reformulation. Since Exxon acquired the product line, it has looked more like a product line run by accountants than engineers.

There are simply multiple better products out there, many of which show the ability to hold their performance advantages long after M1 has given it up.

FWIW, I'll prob get flamed, but I've been using Mobil 1 0W-40 for 16 yrs in my Boxster...usually 2 yrs between changes (per original factory recommendations, since I never hit the mileage limit). Just changed oil last month again, and no metal particles that I could see in the filter. Original IMS at 73K miles. I have no complaints for this oil.

achillies 06-02-2017 09:45 AM

Thanks JFP...what oil do you in your shop?

We use Castrol Syntec 10W-40 and Joe Gibbs DT40 as our standard oils for street use.

Haha, yeah, and the car runs great! When I got the car originally, I think Porsche recommended oil changes at 15k or 20K miles / every 2 yrs (whichever came first). I followed those instructions. Later, they lowered the mileage interval to 12K, and then now 10k I think. Whatever,...my car is an 01, so I follow the factory recommendations at time of build. Lol

A link to a current coupon/deal for either Castrol Syntec or JGDT40 would be also useful.
